Most people have some type of unconscious bias about a person, place, thing, or idea. Unfortunately, such biases are often present regarding people who have visible disabilities. It’s true. People tend to shy away from things they are not familiar with or people who may look different from them. Did you know that approximately 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability?
In this presentation Faith Penn will discuss a little about living with a disability and her road to becoming a mediator. She hopes you all are ready to listen. There will be no PowerPoint. You will be entering her world by using your ears to obtain information! Please get ready to use your active listening skills to receive the information.

An introduction from our speaker: Hello, my name is Faith Nicole Penn. I am a graduate from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s in Public Relations and a minor in English. I am the first and only person in my immediate family to graduate from a four-year university. I currently work at the Texas Workforce Commission as an Employment Discrimination Mediator, and before that held several other positions including Technical Writer, Scheduling Coordinator, Intake Specialist, and Investigator. Before the Texas Workforce Commission, I worked in several positions. I worked in the Today’s section at the Dallas Morning News, as a Child Care Attendant at a country club and daycare, as a Summer Camp Counselor, and as a Residential Instructor. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, working out, playing adapted sports for the blind called Beep Baseball and Goal Ball, dancing, traveling, meeting new people, and visiting with friends. I am the eldest of three and I am the only girl. Growing up I was a huge tom-boy and I am forever working on breaking some of my tom-boyish ways. I was born with Glaucoma, a degenerative eye disease that deals with eye fluid, eye pressure and damage to the optic nerve. In 2006, I lost the only usable sight I had. However, I have learned to accept my blindness and to successfully function independently in everyday life. Recently, I have decided to expand my knowledge of Alternative Dispute Resolution by starting my own business called Good Faith Mediations and Arbitrations, LLC.
